The recent approval of the Parity Law by Congress, with 178 votes in favor and 171 against, marks a milestone in the fight for gender equality in decision-making spheres. This law requires that at least 40% of positions in the governing bodies of large companies and in the General State Administration be occupied by women. It also establishes mandatory gender-balanced electoral lists and balanced representation in the Government and other key institutions such as the Constitutional Court, the Council of State, and the General Council of the Judiciary, among others.
In this way, it aims to ensure equitable representation at all levels of decision-making.
This measure not only guarantees effective representation of women but also promotes diversity and the full utilization of available talent across all sectors.
It is regrettable, however, that such a significant achievement is overshadowed by political tension. The frictions arising during the parliamentary process (particularly those related to the amendment on the Senate’s ability to veto the spending cap) have diverted attention from the true spirit of the law. It is crucial that we work together, overcoming political divisions, to achieve gender equity and ensure that the implementation of this law focuses on its primary objective: guaranteeing the principle of merit and capability in all areas of social, sporting, political, and economic life.
At Women On Board, we see it as essential to continue working to promote gender equality, remembering that collaboration and collective commitment are key to achieving real change. The approval of this law is a step forward, but true transformation will be achieved when everyone, regardless of political differences, unites in the common cause of equality and social justice.
